The Ancient Astrological System

http://www.wolfram.com/applications/astronomer/index.html

Introduction

Astrology is to astronomy as alchemy is to chemistry, and as phrenology is to psychiatry.

There are fixed rules to astrology. Astrological interpretations are deterministic, and this notebook gives an implementation of the most common and ancient rules.

How the ancient astrological system works

For the date and time of your birth, the position of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn can be computed. The Sun, Moon, and planets move along a line in the sky that passes through a fixed set of constellations - the zodiac constellations.*

ZodiacSigns = {
Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer,
Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio,
Sagittarius,Capricorn,Aquarius,Pisces};

*In 500 BC, when the main astrological system was constrtucted, there were 12 signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpius, Sagittarius, Capricornus, Aquarius, and Pisces, with the Sun being in Aries at the start of the vernal equinox. Unfortunately precession has meant that the vernal equinox as of now (2000 AD) is in Pisces, and is moving into Aquarius. So the dates for horoscopes are currently all wrong, and we should be using the zodiac sign one earlier in the list. What is worse, the Sun and planets move through 13 constellations now - after Scorpius it moves into Ophiuchus before moving into Sagittarius. Moderrn astrologers ignore these changes that have occured in the last 2,500 years.

The position of the Sun at your birth determines your zodiac sign. According to the ancient system, the Sun rules your ego and individuality. The position of the other planets determine additional traits. In particular the Moon rules your emotions, feelings, responses, and habits. Mercury rules your communication, learning, listening, speaking, and writing abilities.Venus rules your love life and harmony with nature. Mars rules your physical energy, assertiveness, aggression, sexual activity, and sporting activity. Jupiter rules your desires to expand mentally or physically. Saturn rules your fears and limitations.

PlanetTraits = {
Sun -> {"ego", "individuality"},
Moon -> {"emotions", "feelings",
"responses", "habits"},
Mercury -> {"communication skills",
"learning ability",
"writing ability",
"listening ability",
"speaking ability"},
Venus -> {"love life",
"harmony with nature"},
Mars -> {"physical energy",
"assertiveness",
"aggression",
"sexual activity",
"sporting activity"},
Jupiter -> {"desires mentally",
"desires physically"},
Saturn -> {"fears", "limitations"}};

Each planet rules the traits as listed above. The particular expression of that trait is controlled, or modified, by the position of the planet in the zodiac at the time of your birth. Three classes of modifications were given in the original system. The first is the Active/Passive style, the second is the Cardinal/Fixed/Mutable state, and the third is the Fire/Earth/Air/Water element. The arrangement is as follows.

SignModifiers = {
Aries ->{Active, Cardinal,Fire },
Taurus ->{Passive,Fixed, Earth},
Gemini ->{Active, Mutable, Air },
Cancer ->{Passive,Cardinal,Water},
Leo ->{Active, Fixed, Fire },
Virgo ->{Passive,Mutable, Earth},
Libra ->{Active, Cardinal,Air },
Scorpius ->{Passive,Fixed, Water},
Sagittarius->{Active, Mutable, Fire },
Capricornus->{Passive,Cardinal,Earth},
Aquarius ->{Active, Fixed, Air },
Pisces ->{Passive,Mutable, Water}};

As an example, if the Moon were in Aries at the time of your birth, you would apply the Active style modifier, Cardinal state modifier, and Fire element modifier to your emotions, feelings, responses, and habits, which are the traits that the Moon determines.

There are two styles, three states, and four elements.

The 12 zodiac signs can be split into two groups of six, with one group given an "Active" style, and the other group given a "Passive" style.

TwoStyles = {
Active -> {"forcefully",
"energetically",
"positively",
"unthinkingly"},
Passive -> {"contemplatively",
"retiringly",
"calmly",
"ambivalently"}};

The 12 zodiac signs can alternatively be split into three groups of four, with groups given a "Cardinal", "Fixed", or "Mutable" state.

ThreeStates = {
Cardinal -> {"seeking out",
"searching",
"a self starter",
"self-assertive",
"at the forefront"},
Fixed -> {"set in your ways",
"stubborn",
"loyal",
"tenacious",
"dedicated",
"highly capable",
"strong-willed"},
Mutable -> {"adaptable",
"changing your ways",
"versatile",
"lively",
"intelligent",
"multi-talented",
"imaginative"}};

Yet another way, is to split the 12 zodiac signs into four groups of three, with groups named after the four classical elements.

FourElements = {
Fire -> {{"ardent",
"enthusiastic",
"warm",
"forthright",
"honest",
"optimistic"},
{"aggressive",
"domineering",
"offensive",
"impatient",
"blunt",
"egotistical",
"chauvinistic",
"thoughtless",
"itinerant",
"hot-tempered"}},
Earth -> {{"steady",
"reliable",
"practical",
"down-to-earth",
"businesslike",
"loyal",
"sensible",
"patient",
"precise"},
{"dull",
"materialistic",
"ruthless",
"critical",
"lascivious",
"mean",
"slovenly",
"over-serious",
"stubborn",
"self-righteous",
"depressive"}},
Air -> {{"communicative",
"lively",
"calm",
"inventive",
"intelligent",
"resourceful",
"logical",
"charming",
"talented"},
{"self-opinionated",
"impractical",
"naughty",
"detached",
"unfeeling",
"eccentric",
"highly strung",
"lacking in direction",
"cold"}},
Water -> {{"sensitive",
"kind",
"protective",
"sacrificing",
"sympathetic",
"supportive",
"intuitive"},
{"grasping",
"over-emotional",
"controlling",
"untidy",
"dreamy",
"lacking in morals",
"destructive",
"revengeful"}}};

The four elements include both positive and negative attributes. Contemporary astrologers do not like to mention the negative attributes. The astrological analysis returned by the routine in this notebook sticks to the ancient rules, and includes the negative attributes. They are not nice, but you might find them amusing.

Apart from the zodiac, astrologers also use another partition of the sky - houses. The ascendant on the eastern horizon marks the beginning of the first house.The beginning of the first house through to the end of the fifth house are below the horizon. The start of sixth house through to the end of twelve house (which is equivalent to the start of the first house) are above the horizon. According to astrologers each house is representative of an area of life. The position of a house depends on the hour of birth. The zodiac part depends only on the day of birth.

HouseAreaOfLife = {
First ->{
"your physical appearance"},
Second ->{"financial concerns",
"your earning potential",
"your possessions",
"your appetite"},
Third ->{"short-distance travel",
"childhood education",
"relatives",
"general communication"},
Fourth ->{"your father",
"your private life",
"hereditary factors",
"your home life"},
Fifth ->{"creativity",
"children",
"romantic attachments",
"gambling"},
Sixth ->{"your work environment",
"health interests",
"small animals or pets"},
Seventh ->{"marital concerns",
"business concerns",
"childhood friendships",
"open enemies"},
Eighth ->{"births and deaths",
"inheritance",
"your sexuality",
"spiritual interests"},
Ninth ->{"long-distance travel",
"higher learning",
"philosophy",
"teaching"},
Tenth ->{"your mother",
"your aims",
"your ambitions",
"fulfilment"},
Eleventh ->{"friends",
"groups and societies",
"social activity"},
Twelfth ->{"hospitals",
"prisons",
"guilts",
"sorrows"}};

The position of a house depends on the hour of birth. The zodiac part depends on the day of birth. You can only perform a house reading if you know the hour of birth.
