A.3 Installing a Single-Machine Copy on Macintosh

Section 4.2 described how to install Mathematica on a Macintosh client so that it uses a network license supplied by a license server. In some cases, however, you may wish to run Mathematica with a single-machine license. This may happen, for example, if the license server crashes or if the client is denied a license because all process slots are already filled. In this case, follow the procedure given below to install Mathematica with a single-machine password.

To complete the installation you will need to contact Wolfram Research and obtain a password (see Section 1.4.2 for details).

To install a single-machine copy of Mathematica on Mac OS X:

1. Insert the Mathematica CD. The Mathematica CD window appears on your screen.

2. Double-click the folder marked Mathematica 4.2 for Mac OS X in the CD window. The following installer screen appears.

3. Drag the Mathematica 4.2 icon to the location on your hard drive where you wish to install Mathematica.

4. Mathematica starts up and the following dialog box appears. Click the radio button marked Single Machine. Enter your name, the name of your organization, and your license number in the text boxes provided. The license number is printed on the license certificate included in the box. Click OK when you are done.

5. Enter your password in the space provided. Contact Wolfram Research to obtain a password (see Section 1.4.2 for details). You will need the MathID shown in the dialog box and the license number printed on your license certificate. Click OK when you are done.

Note: If you chose not to enter license information in step 4, you can still run in MathReader mode. In this mode you cannot create or edit notebooks, but you can view and print them.

To install a single-machine copy of Mathematica on Mac OS 8-9:

1. Insert the Mathematica CD. The Mathematica CD window appears on your screen.

2. Double-click the Mathematica 4.2 for Mac OS 8-9 icon, and click Continue on the screen that appears.

3. Select Standard Install or Minimal Install from the pop-up menu in the installer dialog box.

4. Use the buttons at the bottom of the dialog box to select another location, if desired. Click Install to continue the installation process.

5. You can enter your license information now or wait until the first time you launch Mathematica. To enter your license information now, click the first radio button in the dialog box. Then click Finish.

6. Mathematica starts up and the front end password dialog box appears. Click the radio button marked Single Machine. Enter your name, the name of your organization, and your license number in the text boxes provided. The license number is printed on the license certificate included in the box. Click OK when you are done.

7. Enter your password in the space provided. Contact Wolfram Research to obtain a password (see Section 1.4.2 for details). You will need the MathID shown in the dialog box and the license number printed on your license certificate. Click OK when you are done.

Note: If you chose not to enter license information in step 6, you can still run in MathReader mode. In this mode you cannot create or edit notebooks, but you can view and print them.
