Subscript[x, y]
is an object that formats as x_y.
Subscript[x, y1, y2, ...]
formats as x_(y_1,y_2,…).
  • In a notebook, a subscript can be created using Ctrl+_ or Ctrl+-. Ctrl+Space moves out of the subscript position.
  • Input of the form x_y in a notebook is interpreted as Subscript[x, y].
  • The baseline of Subscript[x, y] is taken to be the baseline of x.
  • Subscript[x, y] is normally output with y in a smaller font than x.
