SubscriptBox

SubscriptBox[x, y]
is the low-level box representation for x_y in notebook expressions.

SubscriptBox is the low-level representation of Subscript. Except for low-level notebook expression manipulation, SubscriptBox should not need to be used directly.

In a notebook, a SubscriptBox can be created using Ctrl+_ or Ctrl+-. Ctrl+Space moves out of the subscript position.

In StandardForm, explicit SubscriptBox objects are output literally. You can use DisplayForm to see the display form of such objects.

Display a letter with a subscript:

Out[1]//DisplayForm=

A SubscriptBox form is typically interpreted as a Subscript expression:

Out[2]//FullForm=

The standard formatting for Subscript uses SubscriptBox:

Out[1]//FullForm=
