ScriptBaselineShifts
is an option for Style that specifies the minimum distance in

-heights to shift subscripts and superscripts.

The setting ScriptBaselineShifts uses shift sub for subscripts and sup for superscripts.

The default setting ScriptBaselineShifts->{Automatic, Automatic} shifts subscripts and superscripts by a distance that depends on their height.

Default placement of subscripts and superscripts:

Subscripts shifted down by two times their heights:
