Installation difficulties
Check the installation web page at support.wolfram.com/publicon/systems. If problems persist or for late-breaking news, check the Publicon page at www.wolfram.com/products/publicon.
Preferences
Preferences, such as the names of recent palettes and style sheets or the locations of recently opened and saved files, are stored in the FrontEnd\init.m file within the Publicon preferences directory: C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Publicon.
A convenient way to reset the front end preferences to their default values is to hold down

during start up. This will cause the initialization file to be rebuilt automatically. However, this will also interrupt the start up process. In order to continue past the status screen and reinitiate the start up process, choose Window
Default Document Palette (or Typesetting Tools Palette) from the menus.
The preferences directory may also contain a number of other files and directories that store configuration data and customized files, such as palettes and style sheets, and they must be discarded to restore Publicon to its original configuration. The cleanest way to restore all preferences is to discard the entire preferences directory.
Caches
Information about your Publicon system layout, such as the locations of text resource files and Help Browser files, are stored in caches. These caches are kept in C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\ApplicationData\Publicon\.
A corrupted cache may cause Publicon to produce an error or quit immediately on start up. The most convenient way to restore the caches to their default values is to hold down
during start up. This will cause the caches (including the help browser index) to be rebuilt automatically.
Help files
If Publicon is unable to locate information in the Help Browser, make sure that the documentation has been installed. The documentation files are located in the Documentation/English folder of the Publicon layout.
Graphics
Caches are created for graphics to allow for quick retrieval of images. If you change the display settings on your system, graphics in your notebook may appear strange. To rerender all graphics after changing any setting to your monitor, select the graphics and choose Format
Graphics
Rerender.
SCANDISK and DriveSpace incompatibility
The SCANDISK program that comes with Windows 98 and Windows Me is limited to working with files whose complete path names in DOS mode are no more than 66 characters long. Some files in the Publicon layout have longer path names than this, and SCANDISK treats this as a possible error. If you run SCANDISK interactively, tell it to ignore these errors.
Unfortunately, the DriveSpace 3 disk compression software uses SCANDISK to check the disk before compressing it. Therefore, you will not be able to use DriveSpace 3 to compress a drive that has Publicon installed on it. You can, however, uninstall Publicon, compress the drive, and then reinstall Publicon.
