Linear Functions 1.3: Slope

Student Name:

Comparing Linear Equations-Differences in Slope

The slope of a linear equation determines 2 characteristics of the line:
FilledSmallCircle the magnitude of the slant of the line
FilledSmallCircle the direction of the slant of the line

Magnitude of the Slope

Compare the following linear equations:

Problem 1:
Describe the difference you see between the first equation and the second equation.
Describe the differences you see between the first graph and the second graph.

Problem 1 Answers:

Direction of the Slope

Compare the following linear equations:

Problem 2:
Describe the difference you see between the first equation and the second equation.
Describe the differences you see between the first graph and the second graph.

Problem 2 Answers:

Practice Problems-Differences in Slope

Problem 3: In the following problem, the first graph shows the line y = x + 2. Change the equation for the second graph so that the new equation has a larger slope than .

Problem 4: In the following problem, the first graph shows the line y = x + 2. Change the equation for the second graph so that the new equation has a smaller slope than 3.

Problem 5: In the following problem, the first graph shows the line y = x - 1. Change the equation for the second graph so that the new equation has a negative 2 slope.

Problem 6: In the following problem, the first graph shows the line y = -4x + 2. Change the equation for the second graph so that the new equation has a positive 4 slope.
