How to create a new matrix
Choose Formulas ▸ Standard Math from the Window menu. The Typesetting palette will appear with the Formulas tab selected and the Standard Math Templates subpalette open. Start a matrix template with parens.
In the Typesetting palette click the button that generates a 2 x 2 Matrix with parens.
How to fill in placeholders
Suppose the entry in the top-left position is selected.
Type an entry and select the next placeholder by pressing the TAB key. Repeat this step. (You can select placeholders in the opposite direction by pressing the SHIFT key and the TAB key at the same time.)

Press the CONTROL key and the SPACE bar at the same time to move out of the GridBox.

Move the insertion point to get out of the matrix.

How to add a new column
Place the insertion point to the right of any entry; here the insertion point is to the right of the top-left entry.
Press the CONTROL key and the COMMA key at the same time. A column of placeholders will appear, with the top one selected.

How to add a new row
Place the insertion point to the right of any entry; here the insertion point is to the right of the top-left entry.
Press the CONTROL key and the RETURN key at the same time. A row of placeholders will appear, with the first one selected.
