How to type 
To get a radical, press the CONTROL key and the 2 key (or the @ key) at the same time.

Type the radicand inside the placeholder (which is already selected).

Another way to type 
Start by typing the expression that will be inside the square root.

Select the expression. (You can select the expression by dragging it, by pressing the CONTROL key and the DOT key at the same time repeatedly, or by clicking it repeatedly.)
Select x y
Press the CONTROL key and the @ key at the same time to put a radical around the selection. Get out of the radical by pressing the CONTROL key and the SPACE bar at the same time.
