Automatic Numbering

You can automatically number cells of a certain type, such as sections, subsections, equations, figures, and tables, using the Insert RightTriangle Automatic Numbering Object command. Each of these cell styles has a counter associated with it that keeps a record of the serial number of each cell of that style. The value of this counter can then be displayed to number all cells of that style in the notebook.

To number all Section cells in serial order:

1. Place the cursor at the start of the first Section cell and choose Insert RightTriangle Automatic Numbering Object. This opens a dialog box.

2. From the pop-up menu at the top of the dialog box, select Section and click the radio button marked "This counter object".

3. Click OK to close the dialog box. The number of the cell is displayed in the Section cell at the position of the cursor.

4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 for every other Section cell in the document. Publicon automatically increments the value of the counter and displays the number corresponding to that cell.

Counters for different cell styles are defined in a notebook's style sheet. For example, the "PubliconDefault" style sheet defines counters for most major cell styles, such as Title, Subtitle, Section, Subsection, Subsubsection, and Text. Some style sheets also include counters for equations, figures, and tables.

If you want to number a group of cells for which a counter is not defined, you can do this by adding a cell tag to each of the cells.

To add a tag to any cell:

1. Select the cell and choose Cell RightTriangle Add/Remove Cell Tags. A dialog box appears.

2. In the "Cell Tag" field, type a word or phrase that will identify the current cell.

3. Click Add. The phrase you typed is now a cell tag and appears in the list of cell tags for the notebook shown in the dialog box.

Repeat this procedure for all the cells that you want to number, adding the same cell tag to each one.

To set up the automatic numbering:

1. Place the cursor in the first cell that you want to be numbered and choose Insert RightTriangle Automatic Numbering Object.

2. From the dialog box, click the radio button labeled "The first cell with the tag:".

3. Type in the name of the tag in the box provided, or select it by clicking the list of cell tags displayed in the window.

4. Click OK to close the dialog box. The serial number of the cell is displayed at the position of the cursor.

5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 for all cells that you want to number, in the order that they appear.
