Creating Tables
The Table Inspector
The Table Inspector provides a precise and interactive way to fine tune your tables. To access the Table Inspector, select a table cell (place your cursor inside a table), choose Window
Miscellaneous Formatting
Table Formatting, and click the Table Inspector button. You can also select the Typesetting palette directly, click the
button at the top of the palette, and then click the Table Formatting tab. Or you can right click and access the Table Inspector from the pop-up menu.
The Table Inspector is divided into two sections: Columns and Rows, each of which have settings for Lines, Widths (Heights), and Alignments.
• Scope: Indicates the range of selection. Tables consist of subtables, which can be seen when selecting various ranges within. These subtables are referred to as "subgrids" and can take options separately from the rest of the table. To select an entire subgrid, place the cursor anywhere within the table's contents and press
.
repeatedly to expand the selection.
• Lines: Allows you to add lines after every column (or row) but the last one. Values entered represent the thickness (in printer's points) of the line. A value of 0 would be no line. All will set all columns to 1; None will set all columns to 0.
• Widths (columns): By default, all column widths are an equal percentage (represented as a decimal). Equalize also achieves this result. You can enter your own values, but they must add up to 1. If your values add up to greater than 1, use the Reconcile button, which will adjust the values so they add up to 1, but keep the proportions you entered.
• Heights (rows): Sets the minimum height of a row in
-heights (the height of the letter
in the default font size). Equalize sets all row heights to 1.
• Alignments: If nothing in the field is selected, the various alignment buttons will set all columns (or rows) to their value. You can also select a value in the field and click a button to apply the value to just the selection.
To test your settings, click Apply. To undo your settings, click the Restore button for the section you were adjusting. If you change your table selection, click Refresh. To apply your settings and close the Table Inspector, click OK. To close the Table Inspector without applying any adjustments, click Cancel.
Note: The Table Inspector does not operate on entire tables or subgrids containing spanning elements.
