Using Cells in a Document

Cells provide an easy way to organize and format your document.

Publicon documents are composed of cells that are automatically arranged into nested groups that reflect the structure of your document. The extent of each cell is indicated by a bracket to its right. You can open and close cell groups by double-clicking the outermost cell bracket of the group.

When a group is closed, only the first cell in the group is displayed, and the group bracket is shown with a triangular flag at the bottom. This allows you to view the outline of a large document and then open only the specific section you want to see.

Cells come in a variety of styles, such as Title, Section, Subsection, and Text. You should try to use the appropriate cell style for each document element.

To create a new cell:

1. Move the pointer until it becomes a horizontal I-beam.

2. Click, and a cell insertion bar will appear; then start typing. By default, new cells are created in Text style.

To create a new heading cell:

1. Click in the notebook to get a cell insertion bar.

2. Choose the desired heading cell style, such as Section, from the Format RightTriangle Style submenu. You can also use a keyboard shortcut, for example, AltKeyLeftModified1RightModified (CommandKeyLeftModified1RightModified on Macintosh) for Section cells.

3. Start typing. The text goes into a new cell that has a format appropriate for ordinary text.

To change the style of a cell:

1. Select the cell bracket. The bracket is highlighted.

2. Choose a style, such as Head1, from the Format RightTriangle Style submenu.

To print a document:

Choose File RightTriangle Print. The notebook styles are automatically optimized for printing.

To change the overall look of a notebook:

1. Choose Format RightTriangle Style Sheet.

2. Choose a style sheet, such as BioMedCentral, from the list.
