Aligning Equations

Introduction

It is possible to create groups of equations that are aligned on an operator (the equal sign is used by the default templates). To create aligned equations, use the Aligned buttons under the Equations tab in any document palette. Use n for numbered equations, and s for subnumbered equations (1a, 1b, 1c, ...). The buttons will paste the template . To change the "=" to something else, simply backspace over it and type something else. Aligned equations in Publicon are configured as two column tables, with the aligned operator positioned flush left in the second column. Each "line" of the equation is actually another cell in the aligned equation cell group.

The horizontal positioning of aligned equations can be adjusted for aesthetic considerations. By default, these two-column cells are centered with each column taking up half of the screen, but you may prefer to have the aligned cell group aligned left as a whole on the longest equation of the group. Select all the cells making up the aligned equation group, then click the bar below the Aligned buttons to reveal the column adjustment buttons.

The Incremental buttons adjust the column widths in 10% increments, while the Small Increment buttons adjust the widths in 1% increments. Clicking on the left-direction buttons reduces the column width of the left column and increases the width of the right column. The reverse is true with the right-direction buttons. This allows you to tune the apparent position of the aligned equation cell group to exploit the available white space where it is most appropriate.
