Editing Expressions

Checking Balance

Check Balance expands the selection to cover the nearest pair of matched bracketing characters outward from the selection point. You can use Check Balance to verify that all open parentheses, braces, and brackets are paired with a corresponding closing character.

To select a nested expression:

1. Select anywhere within the expression by clicking.

2. Choose Edit RightTriangle Math RightTriangle Check Balance.

3. Repeat to expand the selection to the pair of enclosing parentheses, brackets, or braces. Each time you choose Check Balance, Publicon expands the selection in both directions until it finds pairs of matching parentheses, brackets, or braces.

Making Fine Adjustments

When you have an expression displayed on the screen, Publicon allows you to interactively make detailed adjustments to the positions of elements. The commands Nudge Left, Nudge Right, Nudge Up, and Nudge Down "nudge" whatever you have selected by one pixel at your current screen magnification.

You can also use the keyboard shortcuts ControlKeyLeftModifiedRightModified, ControlKeyLeftModifiedRightModified, ControlKeyLeftModifiedRightModified, ControlKeyLeftModifiedRightModified in order to adjust the positions of elements.

Adjusting Spanning Characters

The size of most characters is determined solely by their font size. However, the size of expandable characters can change even within a particular font size. For instance, parentheses expand by default so as to span any expression they contain.

Edit RightTriangle Math RightTriangle Spanning Characters provides three options for controlling the height of expandable characters.

Expand Indefinitely. All expandable characters will grow indefinitely in order to span the expression they contain.

Don't Expand. All expandable characters will be displayed at their normal font size and will not grow to span the expression they contain.

Automatic. Parentheses, arrows, and bracketing bars will all grow indefinitely to span the contained expression; however, brackets, braces, and slashes will only grow to a limited size.
