Before you can transfer data between Mathematica notebooks and Excel workbooks using the Clipboard, you first need to install the MathematicaLink add-in in Excel. See Loading the Add-In.
Once installed, the MathematicaLink add-in adds the required Mathematica Copy and Paste commands to Excel. These commands perform the needed conversion of Clipboard contents to and from Mathematica lists.
