The first time you request a Mathematica evaluation in Excel, a link to a local Mathematica kernel will open automatically. To open a link, even if there is nothing to evaluate: You can manually specify a kernel to connect to using the Mathematica Options  Kernel tab. Settings you specify will be used automatically the next time you connect.
